Leah's February update

Leah's foster mother wrote this report.

Leah has now been in her home over two years. Other than her speech needing a little improvement, she is a completely normal and healthy little girl.

Leah likes to eat meat of any kind. She doesn’t really like vegetables. She loves all kinds of fruit and also candy of course. She loves playing with her dolls and stuffed animals. She loves her Barbie the most. She likes brushing the hair on her Barbie. She is a very calm and quiet girl, she also has a very good temper. She cries easily if she is scared, but with a little attention and care she cheers right up. She is very scared of needles and getting shots, but a piece of candy can always cheer her up. She is very receptive to hugs. She responds very well to encouragement when doing something or trying something new.

She is so smart and lovely, we love her very much!!

Leah's January update

Leah’s Foster Mother wrote this report.
Leah is 4 years and 9 months old.

We recently received news that Leah was matched with a family in the US!

Leah was so happy on Christmas Eve afternoon. The whole way home, she was saying “Merry Christmas!” She was just as happy as she could be. She kept saying, “I have so many different presents! I got a Barbie doll, markers, a pencil, a new tablet, and a video, and cookies, and candy, and...” She went on and on, listing each of her gifts right down to the toothbrush and toothpaste! When we got home, she demonstrated how to use each of her gifts. She showed me how to use her new comb to smooth her hair; she got the markers and pencil out and began writing numbers on the new tablet. She really has enjoyed all of the presents. She even got a movie about Joseph. She always wants to watch it, and she is excited to see it each time!

Leah's December update

Dear Friends,

(Leah's Foster Mother wrote this report.
Leah is 4 years and 8 months old.)

On December 1st we went to a meeting to listen to a seminar on the “6 A’s of Parenting.” It was a wonderful time of learning new methods and ideas on how to raise the children. Some of the suggested things to teach children (like their names, ages, and family information), Leah already knows. However, in some areas—like working on proper speech and pronunciation—we can continue practicing with her. Even though her pronunciation isn’t always the best, we can tell she is really trying hard and doing her best. She is so smart! We hope to continue to help Leah with her speech and pronunciation. We also want to help her become more self-confident; sometime Leah is frightened when she first sees new things. But Leah is growing and getting better everyday.

Blessings,

Updates from foster care

We just received the last few months of updates from New Day:

June 2007

On Children’s Day (June 1st), Leah’s foster mom took her to a local park to play. Leah enjoyed playing with her ball and walking along the river. Her mom tries to take her for walks every day. Her foster family is really working with Leah on her speech and vocabulary. She is learning more and more two syllable words now. Her foster mom says that Leah is a quick learner and is making so much progress!

July 2007

In June, Leah's foster family took her to the zoo. Leah, who is 4 years old, hasn't been to the zoo often, so she forgot a lot of the animal names. When the family reached the monkey cage, her foster mom gave her some food to feed the monkeys and taught her to say, "Monkey." Leah was a little scared to feed the animals, but once she tried it she thought it was great fun! Leah's family bought her a fun animal mask at the gift shop, and she got to play a game called "Hit the Mouse." Leah had a wonderful outing, and she was so happy at the zoo. Her family loved having the chance to give her a new experience - they love her very much!

Aug 2007

This month Leah has been working especially hard to learn new words. Even though her speech isn’t the clearest, she really tries very hard. She has made quite a bit of progress in the past few months. She can now say “ape” because she received a toy ape from one of her sponsors. She has also learned to say “camel”, “swan”, “hippo”, and “deer” (all in Chinese, of course.) Leah also likes to draw these animals on the whiteboard in her house. She is also learning to write numbers now. Her foster family gives her a lot of encouragement in all of her learning.

Sept 2007

Leah is doing very well these days. Her foster mom is teaching her how to wash her hair and what to do when she takes a bath. Leah really enjoys having her hair washed – she says it’s so much fun and even tickles a bit. She washes her hair with children’s shampoo and knows how to put her head under the faucet to rinse her hair. She then quickly grabs her towel to dry her hair. Leah’s foster mom says she is a very bright girl who has brought a lot of joy to their home.

Oct 2007

This report was written by Leah’s foster parents:

Leah can now sing the song “Little Yan Zi” and other children’s songs. She has a little trouble with songs with six words in a line, but she is getting better everyday. Leah is also learning how to brush her teeth. To keep Leah from accidentally swallowing toothpaste, we let her use salt water to brush her teeth. We also only let her brush every other day. At this age, she learns fast but also forgets fast, but she’ll get it soon! She is so cute; she is always so eager and excited to learn.

Nov 2007

Leah’s Foster Mother wrote this report.
Leah is 4 years and 7 months old.

Leah has been studying a new song, but we are teaching her slowly, only three or four words at a time so that she can remember it easily. It starts with the words, “Every year spring comes…” She can’t quite sing the whole song yet, but she is working hard. She loves to sing and has a beautiful voice. We are slowly starting to enter the winter season. She is learning what clothes are appropriate for winter, and which clothes are not appropriate to wear for this season. Leah also has a new hobby of watching the 6:00 p.m. animal show on TV. She is so cute!

New Day

We've just learned that Leah is actually in foster care run by New Day Creations in Luoyang. This is great news - New Day is spoken very highly of, and we can also get many more updates that we could if she was still in the orphange.

We've spoken with the New Day director in Beijing, but the Luoyang directors are in the USA for the holidays. As soon as they return to China we should be able to get some more information.

New Day's information puts Leah as a year older than her referral information - according to them she will turn five in April.

Here's some photos from New Day:

Isn't she cute?

Her grumpy face:

Excerpts from the referral information:

“Dang Yi Ya was found abandoned near the Luoyang Bus Station on October 1, 2004. Her birthday was estimated to be on June 19, 2004, according to her physical development.”

“In September and December, 2004, she had two surgeries in the People’s Hospital of Luoyang City (for cleft lip and palate) with good outcome.”

“She has good life routine and good appetite. She is not picky at food. Her favorite food includes: soup, congee (rice porridge), noodle, pancakes with meat inside, fried rice, fish, cracker and bananas.”

“Presently, she is somewhat introverted, is obedient and cute. She gets along with others well and loves to contact others without the feeling of strange.”

The report also describes her as active, fond of listening to music, having a ready smile, getting along with others well, and energetic, and it says that her favorite toy is a toy car.
